My journey as a blood donor began with the inspiration I found at home. My mom often told me stories about her family, how her elder brother and uncle were regular blood donors, and how her father had gone even further by donating his organs. She always reminded me that doing good deeds, loving one another, and helping one another is the greatest way we can live.
Those words stayed in my heart as I grew up. During the pandemic, I decided to step forward and give for the first time. That first donation changed me, it showed me the power of kindness in action. From that day until now (September 22, 2025), I have donated 14 times. My next appointment is especially meaningful, on November 24th, I will celebrate both my 25th birthday and my 15th blood donation.
Six of my donations were in my home country of Sri Lanka, and the rest here in Canada. But my story is not finished, it is only beginning. My goal is to continue donating blood for as long as I live. I have seen with my own eyes how people suffer from illness, from accidents, from a lack of available blood. If my small act can ease that suffering, if my blood can save even one life, then I know I am living with purpose.
For me, blood donation is not just a service, it is the highest form of kindness. It is a gift that every one of us is capable of giving. I hope my future children will see this in me, not just as their father, but as a human being who gave what he could for others. I want them to feel proud, to carry this legacy forward, and to understand that kindness costs nothing, yet it is priceless to those who receive it.
As Jesus said, “Love one another. As I have loved you". That is what blood donation means to me. It is love in action. It is a promise to stand behind those in need. It is being part of a lifeline that connects us all.
May God bless everyone who gives, receives, and supports this mission of saving lives. Amen.
